This was my third rebuild and probably least problematic rebuild to date.
Love the large display on these games , but a nightmare if it dies.
Work Done
Cleaned up and patched/repainted damaged artwork on cabinet
Re-brassed the metal ramps and clear coated.
Stripped and cleaned playfield
Repaired all VUK damaged areas
Fixed warped ramps.
Flattened plastics
Full flipper rebuild
Fixed Frankenstein head, missing monster board.
New LEDs
Repaired launcher switch with new nylon switch parts.
Fixed ghosting on inserts
Playfield was Dirty. Stripped it all down , removed mylar. VUK cutouts were smashed and needed to be repaired.
The only problem the playfield had was hosting around the inserts.
This was the first time I had experienced this. This seems to be caused when the insert separates from the clear coat, or something like that. This then causes a little pocket of air around the insert.
I tried to use some superglue to try and flood the insert to fill up the void. It looked great when I filed , but once dried out it looked terrible. Don't use super glue.
WARNING!!!! Always use gloves when using UV Resin , I believe this stuff is extremely toxic when in liquid form.
I then did some research on this problem and people were using UV cure-able resin. You get this cheaply off ebay. You cut a small amount , say around the edge of the insert , maybe in an area you can paint over, then run the resin into the air pocket and gently push up and down on the bubble. This causes a capillary action which draws the resin into the insert. Once you are happy use the UV light end to cure the resin.
This shows the completed playfield inserts. They are not perfect but look a lot better and the ghosting is hardly noticeable.
This shows the repaired VUK cutouts repaired
As with all my rebuilds, the playfield was done with 2K clear coat.
Two layers of 2K , then sanded flat , filled any dips around some inserts and dents.
Applied final flow coat and then sanded and polished/buffed.
Touched up any small chips and scratches on cabinet , also fixed the usual wear seen on all of these Frankenstein's around the flipper buttons.
After paint was repaired I naturally clear coated the whole cabinet with 2K clear.
I love the artwork on this cabinet , one of my favourites from the 90's.
Finished - Almost.. Can you spot what was missing?
Metal rails. Got these replated and clear coated, took longer than expected
Brass plating pops.
